Als kleiner Bub wird Samuel dem Benediktinerkloster Hirsau geschenkt und im Sinne des Ordens erzogen. Er lernt und erlebt viel, wird ein bedeutender Ordensmann, zum Abt in Lorsch geweiht und erhält den Namen Erminold, der gro e Waltende. Auf abenteuerlichen Wegen gelangt der Medicus Marco von Salerno nach Lorsch, wo er den Abt schwer krank auffindet, ihm aber wirksam helfen kann. Zwischen den beiden Männern entwickelt sich eine ernste Freundschaft. Erminold wird der erste Abt im Reformkloster Priefling bei Regensburg. Am Ende ereignet sich eine Katastrophe: Der Abt wird beim Gebet im Seitenchor der Kirche St. Georg angegriffen und am Kopf schwer verwundet. Der erfahrene Medicus soll ihn aber nicht operieren.

Am 13. Januar 1940 bin ich in Dresden geboren. Nach der Zerstörung der Stadt, an die ich mich erinnere, konnten meine Mutter, die jüngere Schwester und ich zu bäuerlichen Verwandten ins westfälische Sauerland gelangen. Dort und später in Handorf bei Münster besuchte ich die Volksschule. Ab 1950 war ich Schüler des Gymnasium Paulinum Münster, wo ich nach dem Abitur 1959 die vorklinische Medizin studierte. Die klinischen Semester verbrachte ich in Münster, Kiel und größtenteils in Würzburg, wo ich mich in der Neurochirurgie als Famulus betätigen und eine Dissertationsarbeit beginnen konnte. Ich lernte eine charmante Studentin der Volkswirtschaft kennen, wir heirateten 1965, wurden beide in Stuttgart beruflich tätig, zogen dann um nach Annweiler am Trifels, wo unser erster Sohn geboren wurde. Gut eineinhalb Jahre arbeitete ich dann in Münster, wo unser zweiter Sohn zu Welt kam. Nach den Lehr- und Wanderjahren zog es uns wieder nach Würzburg zurück; 1970 bekamen wir eine Tochter. In der klinischen Neurochirurgie war ich tätig, wie auch in Wissenschaft und Lehre. Von Würzburg verschlug es uns 1982 nach Regensburg, wo ich im Krankenhaus Barmherzige Brüder eine neurochirurgische Klinik aufbauen konnte, damals die erste in Ostbayern. 2001 zog ich mich von der operativen Medizin zurück und betreute ärztlich noch gut fünf Jahre die neu eingerichtete Palliativstation am o. g. Krankenhaus. Nach der Pensionierung ab 1. Januar 2007 helfe ich noch ein wenig in einer neurochirurgischen Praxis bei der Sprechstunde und halte bisweilen Unterricht oder auch mal einen Vortrag über Palliativmedizin. Meine Frau und ich sind vollauf begeistert von unseren Enkeltöchtern.
