Aber den Grund, die Geschichte und Wirkungen dieser Sagen und Dichtungen durch alle Nationen und Jahrhunderte, in denen sie geblüht, zu untersuchen und ein Phänomen der Menschheit ins Licht zu stellen, dies wäre nach den schönen Vorarbeiten dazu ein ruhmwürdiges Abenteuer, so angenehm als belehrend." - Dieses Zitat von Johann Gottfried Herder könnte passender nicht sein. Wohl keine zweite Person aus dem europäischen Mittelalter ist heute noch so allgegenwärtig wie die Figur des König Artus. Die Ritter der Tafelrunde und die Abenteuer des Königs beschäftigen seit über 900 Jahren Erzähler, Sänger, Dichter und Schreiber. Sowohl damals als auch heute finden wir zahlreiche Zeugnisse für die Verwendung der Artussage. Ich denke nicht, dass Hartmann von Aue, der den Artus in jedem seiner Werke auf irgendeine Art einsetzt, gedacht hätte, dass Jerry Bruckheimer viele Jahrhunderte später einen Film über eben diesen König drehen wird. Abgesehen davon, dass die Ansätze der Kreativen oftmals stark voneinander abweichen, bleibt jedoch eins beständig: König Artus ist eine Vorbildfigur. Er vereint alle ritterlichen Tugenden und Pflichten, sowie die Qualitäten eines wahren Herrschers in sich und gilt als nahezu unfehlbar. Um diese Vorstellung einer königlichen Referenz zu untersuchen und den Grund für die andauernde Verwendung der Figur Artus herauszuarbeiten, versuche ich in dieser Hausarbeit eine möglichst genaue Skizze der Entwicklung der Sage darzustellen, berühmte Aufgriffe der Sage zu analysieren und moderne Adaptionen zu interpretieren. Ferner möchte ich sehen, ob der gesellschaftliche Stellenwert der Figur des Artus sich irgendwann signifikant gewandelt hat, oder ob er üb
