Kleiner Katechismus - Baptistenversion Manch einer kann sich vielleicht unter einem Katechismus gar nichts vorstellen, was nicht verwunderlich ist, da Katechismen in unserer Zeit vielerorts kaum noch in Gebrauch sind. Dabei war es bereits in der alten Kirche (im 4.-5. Jahrhundert) üblich, diejenigen, die in die Gemeinde aufgenommen werden wollten, anhand von Katechismen in den Grundlehren des christlichen Glaubens zu unterweisen. Eine alte und bewährte christliche Tradition, die heute weitgehend in Vergessenheit geraten ist. In der Zeit der Reformation wurden Katechismen zu einem der wichtigsten Mittel, mit denen den Gläubigen die rechte biblische Lehre nahegebracht wurde. So sagte Luther treffend über den von ihm verfassten Katechismus: "Der Katechismus ist eine Laienbibel. In ihm ist der ganze Inhalt der christlichen Lehre inbegriffen, die einem jeden Christen zur Seligkeit zu wissen nötig ist." Dies gilt gleicherma en auch für den vorliegenden Kleinen Katechismus. Er entspricht in seiner Lehre dem Baptistischen Glaubensbekenntnis von 1689. Es handelt sich hierbei um eine baptistische Bearbeitung des Kleinen Westminster Katechismus von 1648. Fünf Jahre lang hatten einige der herausragenden protestantischen Theologen an diesem Katechismus mitgearbeitet, um ihn in seine endgültige Form zu bringen. Der Kirchenhistoriker Philip Schaff (1819-1893) vergleicht den Kleinen Westminster Katechismus mit den beiden anderen weit verbreiteten evangelischen Katechismen und kommt dabei zu dem Ergebnis: "Er übertrifft diese bei weitem in Klarheit und in der sorgsamen Wahl der Worte. ... Seine mathematisch präzisen Definitionen sind manchmal nahezu vollkommen." Der Kleine Katechismus zielt in erster Linie darauf ab, die Kinder gläubiger Eltern zu Christus zu führen. Er führt uns von Gott, den wir verherrlichen und an dem wir uns ewig erfreuen sollen (1-12), über den gefallenen Zustand der Menschheit (13-20) zu Gottes gnädigem Heilshandeln durch Christus, den Erlöser (21-29).
