In der breiteren Öffentlichkeit herrscht der Eindruck vor, dass eine signifikante, kurzfristige und irreversible Erhöhung der globalen Durchschnittstemperaturen längst wissenschaftlich unzweideutig erwiesen und die damit verbundenen negativen Folgewirkungen wie dramatische Überschwemmungen, die Zunahme zerstörerischer Wirbelstürme und ein dauerhaftes Abschmelzen der Polkappen unaufhaltsam seien. Als Auslöser für diese besorgniserregende Kettenreaktion wurde der Mensch identifiziert. Beginnend mit der Industrialisierung Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts habe der Mensch durch den exzessiven Verbrauch fossiler Brennstoffe und den unkontrollierten Aussto klimaschädlicher Treibhausgase (u.a. Kohlendioxid, Methan, Lachgas) derart massiv in das fragile Gleichgewichtssystem der Erde eingegriffen, dass die Zukunft der Menschheit schlechthin in Frage gestellt werden müsse. Die aktuelle Diskussion über Ursachen und Folgen der anthropogen verursachten Erderwärmung wird dabei bestimmt durch emotional aufgeladene Schlüsselbegriffe und Wortbilder wie "Klimakatastrophe" oder "Klimakollaps". Faktoren, die für den Temperaturanstieg verantwortlich gemacht werden, werden plakativ als "Klimakiller" bezeichnet, die es unabhängig von rationalen Effizienzüberlegungen überall und allerorten gleicherma en zu bekämpfen bzw. zu beseitigen gilt. Diese Charakterisierungen dominieren den Diskurs und vermitteln beim Publikum den Eindruck einer nahenden und unausweichlichen Zuspitzung der Lage, in der nicht nur eine grundlegende und irreversible Veränderung des Weltklimas, sondern der Verlust der menschlichen Lebensgrundlagen auf der Erde drohe.
