Kaum eine andere Frage hat die wissenschaftliche Pädagogik der letzten Jahre so beschäftigt, wie die nach den Qualifikationen des Lehrers und in dessen Folge die Frage nach einer den Erfordernissen der Praxis entsprechenden Ausbildung. Die Erfordernisse der Pädagogik sind bestimmt von dem Telos, das in diesem Tun leitend ist: ob der Sinn pädagogischer Praxis sich darin erschöpft, Menschen als brauchbare Bürger für die Zwecke von Wirtschaft und Politik zu qualifizieren, oder ob man den Menschen auch als Zweck seiner selbst sieht, seine Persönlichkeitsentfaltung fördert. Die Beantwortung dieser Frage zeigt eine Vielzahl von Meinungen. Die Pluralität der theoretischen Aussagen macht sie für die Praxis wenig hilfreich. Das ist um so bedenklicher, je mehr pädagogische Praxis zur Profession wird, je mehr Bereiche des alltäglichen Lebens der pädagogischen Hilfe bedürfen, und je mehr diese Hilfe auf eine ausdrückliche Reflexion angewiesen ist. Daraus ergibt sich eine weitere Problematik des schwierigen Lehrberufs: Kann denn Wissenschaft überhaupt die Praxis anleiten? Jene ist universal und allgemein, abstrakt und formal; diese ist konkret und einmalig. Wird hier nicht ein Widerspruch deutlich, der die Wissenschaft als Regenten der Praxis ungeeignet erscheinen lässt? Werden nicht vielmehr jene psychischen Faktoren ma geblich, die man häufig mit dem eher vagen Begriff Intuition umschreibt?
