2017: Bert Winter gehört zu der immer seltener werdenden Spezies der evangelischen Pfarrer in Deutschland, 47 Jahre, geschieden, zwei Kinder. Er ist als Pastor an der Erlöserkirche in Rheinstadt-Benninghausen am Niederrhein, tätig. Er selbst betrachtet sich mit seinem Berufsbild schon als eine Art Dinosaurier, was ihn aber nicht daran hindert, sich ständig mit den aktuellen Medien und Arbeitsmitteln auf dem Laufenden zu halten. Kollegen, die noch ihren Papierkalender nutzen, ihr Fax noch nicht abgemeldet haben, Angst vor dem Datenklau auf sozialen Medien haben und niemals eine Weiterschaltung auf ihr Smartphone wegen der Gefahr permanenter Ruhestörung in Erwägung ziehen, sind ihm suspekt. Er durchlebt beruflich wie privat turbulente Monate, da sich in seiner Gemeinde gro e Verwerfungen aufgrund der kirchlichen Finanz- und Relevanzkrise ankündigen. Zudem hadert er mit den fragilen Strukturen seines komplizierten Familienlebens. In dieser Situation wird er zufällig mit dem Leben eines Vorgängers im Pfarramt, Wilhelm Ortmann, konfrontiert, da er auf dem Dachspeicher seines Pfarrhauses dessen alten Koffer mit Aufzeichnungen und Briefwechseln aus den 30er Jahren in einem Versteck entdeckt. Eine Geschichte von Verrat und Kirchenkampf unter dem Hakenkreuz tut sich auf. Bert Winter beginnt daraufhin, sich für diesen Kirchenmann, der einst die Erlöserkirche in Benninghausen mit aufbaute, zu interessieren. Dessen ungeklärtes Schicksal - seit April 1945 gilt Ortmann als vermisst - versucht er zu ergründen. Die Spuren führen ihn zunächst in kirchliche Archive, aber dann auch bald in die USA. Schlie lich bricht er zu einem kurzen Pilgertrip spontan ins Heilige Land auf. Gleichzeitig kämpft er um den Erhalt der eigenen Kirche, die von Schlie ung bzw. Entwidmung bedroht ist und um den Zusammenhalt seiner eigenen Familie. Konfrontiert mit verschiedenen Krisenherden muss er die Bewährungsprobe seines Lebens bestehen - als womöglich letzter Hirte seiner Gemeinde.
