Die Säbelzahnkatze Homotherium steht im Mittelpunkt des Buches "Der Menschenfresser". Dieses löwengro e Tier mit einer Schulterhöhe von ca. 1,10 Meter, einer Gesamt-länge von etwa 1,90 Metern und einem Gewicht bis zu 400 Kilogramm lebte im Eiszeitalter vor rund 600.000 Jahren auch der Gegend von Wiesbaden. Knochen von Homotherium fand man 1950, 1960 und 1963 in den Mosbach-Sanden bei Wiesbaden. Bei jenen Sanden handelt es sich um Flussablagerungen des Ur-Rheins und Ur-Mains, die nach dem ehemaligen Dorf Mosbach zwischen Wiesbaden und Biebrich benannt sind. Die wahre Natur der im Naturhistorischen Museum Mainz aufbewahrten Säbelkatzen-Funde hat man erst 1970 erkannt. Homotherium war ein gefürchteter Feind von Frühmenschen, die noch über keine wirkungsvollen Waffen verfügten. Au er Säbelzahnkatzen jagten in der Gegend von Wiesbaden auch bis zu 3,60 Meter lange Riesenlöwen, Europäische Jaguare, Leoparden und Geparde. Zeitweise herrschten damals Verhältnisse wie heute in Afrika. Die Texte aus diesem kleinen 88-seitigen Buch stammen aus dem 552 Seiten umfassenden gro en Werk "Wiesbaden vor 600.000 Jahren" des Wiesbadener Wissenschaftsautors Ernst Probst.
