Die Veränderungen reichen von einer Neufassung der Kartell- und Fusionskontrollverordnungen über die derzeitige Diskussion über das Missbrauchsverbot für marktbeherrschende Unternehmen bis hin zur Beihilfenkontrolle. In wenige Worte gefasst, bedeutet der "more economic approach" eine konsequente Ausrichtung der gesamten Wettbewerbspolitik am aktuellen und wissenschaftlich anerkannten Stand der industrieökonomischen Theorie, um zu verhindern, dass ökonomisch falsche Entscheidungen getroffen werden.1 Ein Unternehmenszusammenschluss beispielsweise kann auf der einen Seite ein Überma an Konzentration und Marktmacht zur Folge haben, auf der anderen Seite kann er auch wünschenswerte Wohlfahrtseffekte durch die Realisierung von Effizienzgewinnen bringen. Die Ökonomisierung des Kartellrechts versucht dem durch die verstärkte Berücksichtigung ökonomischer Konzepte Rechnung zu tragen und unternehmerisches Verhalten hinsichtlich seiner konkreten Auswirkungen im jeweils relevanten Markt zu beurteilen.
