Die globale Vernetzung hat nahezu alle Lebensbereiche beeinflusst, sei es auf professioneller oder priva-ter Ebene. So erscheint es kaum verwunderlich, dass der Cyberspace auch bei der Partnersu-che offenbar immer mehr Bedeutung erlangt. Erfahrungsberichte von Paaren, deren Bezie-hung im Internet ihren Ausgangspunkt genommen hat, sind auf einschlägigen Websites, aber auch in Freundeskreisen und den Medien längst keine Seltenheit mehr. Die Nutzer kommuni-kativer Angebote im Internet sehen - im Gegensatz zu jenen, die solche Dienste nicht in Anspruch nehmen - das Internet häufig als das Medium der Zukunft für die Partnersuche. Konventionelle Partnervermittlungen dagegen klagen über rückläufige Umsätze. Besondere Bedeutung in der modernen Partnersuche wird dem Online-Chat zugesprochen, da er aufgrund spezifischer kommunikativer Merkmale für die Kontaktaufnahme in der virtuel-len Welt als besonders geeignet erscheint. Dennoch wird dieser Form der Partnersuche auf-grund derselben Faktoren noch immer häufig mit Skepsis, Zweifeln oder Ablehnung begeg-net. Welche Faktoren sind das, und inwiefern qualifizieren oder disqualifizieren sie den Chat für diesen kommunikativen Zweck? Welche Rolle spielt der Chat in der modernen Partnersu-che tatsächlich, und welches Potenzial ergibt sich möglicherweise daraus? Diesen Fragen geht die vorliegende Arbeit nach. Dazu bietet der erste Teil einen einführenden Überblick in die funktionellen Abläufe und konstitutiven Merkmale des Chat als Kommuni-kationsinstanz.
