Diese Worte stammen von Karl Heinzen, einem der radikalsten Literaten des Vormärz. Sie stehen in einer revolutionären Schrift, die 1846 mit fingiertem Druckort in einem Schweizer Verlag, dem Literarischen Institut , produziert, dann über die Grenze in den Deutschen Bund geschmuggelt, dort verkauft und alsbald verboten wurde. Der Verlag, der Heinzens Schrift druckte, produzierte 1845 bis 1852 eine ganze Reihe solcher Pamphlete - darunter auch Freiligraths Ça ira - und vertrieb sie in den Deutschen Bund. Neben zahlreichen Archiven in der Schweiz und in Deutschland bilden die Bestände dieses Verlagsarchivs eine einzigartige Quellenbasis für eine Sozialgeschichte der Exilliteratur im Vormärz. So untersucht die Studie am Beispiel des Literarischen Instituts und anderer Verlage die Faktoren, die im Vormärz zur Bildung einer exilliterarischen Öffentlichkeit beitrugen. Das "Katz-und-Maus"-Spiel zwischen Verlagen, Exilliteraten und Polizei lief in einer bewegten Phase der europäischen Geschichte ab: Die Ereignisse im Vormärz und in der Revolution von 1848/49 bewogen verschiedene Schweizer Verleger, revolutionäre Schriften deutscher Flüchtlinge zu drucken, die aus der Ferne die politische Entwicklung in ihrer Heimat beeinflussen wollten. Die konservativen Mächte im Deutschen Bund hielten die Schweiz deshalb für einen gefährlichen "Hort der Revolution" und versuchten mit umfangreichen Ma nahmen gegen den Schriftenschmuggel vorzugehen. Die Studie zeigt die Beziehungen zwischen diesen verschiedenen "Feldern" (Bourdieu) auf und analysiert so zentrale Entwicklungen im Vormärz: die politische Emigration, die Auseinandersetzung um Pressefreiheit, die Krise der restaurativen Zensur und Pressekontrolle und den Strukturwandel der Pressepolitik im Deutschen Bund.
