Schwindel als Haupt-oder als Begleitsymptom gehOrt zu den haufig- sten Beschwerden, mit denen Arzte verschiedener Fachrichtungen in ihrer taglichen Praxis konfrontiert werden. Die Phanomenologie, Pathogenese und A tiologie des Schwindels ist von Fall zu Fall unter- schiedlich. 1m Alieingang ist ein Aligemeinpraktiker eben so wie ein Facharzt gelegentlich iiberfordert, wenn er eine prazise Diagnose bei einem an Schwindel leidenden Patienten zu stell en und adaquate Therapie zu verordnen hat. Es lag daher nahe, dieses Problem aus interdisziplinarer Sicht dar- zustellen. Dies geschah im Rahmen eines von der Schweizerischen Vereinigung fur Elektroenzephalographie und klinische Neurophysio- logie am 17. April 1980 in Bern organisierten Symposiums. Dabei wurde unter Vorsitz der Professoren G. Baumgartner (Ziirich), P. Mon- tandon (Gent) und B. Truniger (Luzern) sowohl die Pathophysiologie des Vestibularisschwindels, seine Semiologie und die Untersuchungs- methoden des Vestibularapparates als auch die Schwindelbeschwer- den und ihre Behandlung aus der Sicht des Otologen, Neurologen, Internisten und Piidiaters eingehend besprochen. Das vorliegende Buch enthalt die erweiterten Fassungen der ein- zelnen Referate. Mit dieser Publikation hoffen wir zur interdisziplina- ren Mitarbeit und zur Schlie ung einer Infonnationsliicke auf einem wichtigen Teilgebiet der Medizin beigetragen zu haben.
