Mit den Einnahmen aus der Ölförderung könnten verschiedene Projekte finanziert werden, die der Wirtschaft und dem Sozialwesen des Entwicklungslandes zugute kommen würden. Jedoch würde dadurch die Tier- und Pflanzenwelt sowie die im Yasuni-Nationalpark lebenden indigenen Völker gefährdet werden. Die Frage, die sich die Politiker in Ecuador stellen müssen, ist daher folgende: Soll das Öl gefördert werden oder nicht? Doch wie kann in dieser Debatte eine Entscheidung getroffen werden? Klar scheint zu sein, dass es sich hierbei um zwei moralische Probleme handelt. Soll das Öl auf Kosten der Pflanzen- und Tierwelt sowie der indigenen Völker gefördert werden oder nicht? Und auf der anderen Seiten: Soll so ein Projekt von der internationalen Gemeinschaft finanziell unterstützt werden oder nicht? Warum sollte nicht versucht werden, mit Hilfe einer bekannten Moralphilosophie eine Antwort auf diese Fragen zu finden, um im Anschluss eine Entscheidung treffen zu können? Diese Arbeit soll daher Mills Grundsatz des Nützlichkeitsprinzip auf das praktische Problem der Yasuni-Debatte anwenden, um eine Entscheidung treffen zu können, ob das Öl im Nationalpark gefördert werden soll und ob die Industrieländer in den Fond des ITT-Projekts einzahlen sollen oder nicht.
