Es handelt sich hier um rein virtuelle Räume, in der von Menschen gesteuerte Spielfiguren bewegt werden und sich die Teilnehmer wegen der Persistenz dieser virtuellen Umgebungen zudem auch langfristig aufhalten. Die Grenzen zwischen Spiel und Wirtschaftsleben verwischen zunehmend. Eine potenzielle Einnahmequelle für die Betreiber sind hierbei virtuelle Gegenstände. Obwohl die Spielsoftware in der Grundversion kostenlos ist, spielt Geld auch in dieser Parallelwelt eine gro e Rolle. Wie in der realen Welt kann man auch hier seine Dienste anbieten oder Handel mit virtuellen Gegenständen betreiben. Die bei den vielfältigen Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten zwischen den Nutzern auftretenden juristischen Probleme sind derzeit erst oberflächlich sichtbar. Die bestehenden Strafrechts- und Zivilrechtsnormen erfassen bisher ausschlie lich die reale Welt und noch keine virtuellen Fantasiewelten. Würde es überhaupt keine Regeln in Onlinespielen geben, wäre die Konsequenz ein rechtsfreier Raum. Trotz der hier üblichen spielerischen Freiheit benötigen aber auch virtuelle Welten bei Konflikten Verhaltensnormen für ein erfolgreiches Zusammenwirken der Charaktere. Vergleichbar mit der Situation im World Wide Web sind virtuelle Welten kein rechtsfreier Raum und auch nicht einem eigenen Recht unterworfen, sondern es gelten die ganz normalen Gesetze. Zunächst ist deshalb zu klären, ob hier die Normen aus der realen Welt auf virtuelle Räume übertragbar sind oder ob sich Regelungslücken ergeben, die durch Rechtsprechung oder Gesetzesänderungen zu schlie en sind. Anders als reale Welten sind virtuelle Welten nicht an territoriale Grenzen gebunden, wodurch sich weiterhin die Frage stellt, welches nationale Recht auf die Rechtsbeziehungen in virtuellen Welten überhaupt anwendbar ist.
