Die Studie beschäftigt sich mit der höfischen Gelegenheitslyrik des 17. und frühen 18. Jahrhunderts am Beispiel des Dresdner Hofes August des Starken. Erstmals wird der Gelegenheitslyrik an den regierenden Adel eine systematische Untersuchung gewidmet, die die sozialen, politischen und literarischen Zusammenhänge dieser Gattung erhellt.

Die Untersuchung basiert auf weitgehend unerschlossenen Quellen. Sie arbeitet mit fast 250 Gedichten den gesamten Textkorpus der an Friedrich August I. adressierten Casualgedichte auf. Auf Grund dieser regional, institutionell und zeitlich umgrenzten Fragestellung eröffnen paradigmatische Funktionsanalysen konkrete Einblicke in die Wirkungsabsichten und Funktionsmechanismen panegyrischer Casuallyrik an deutschen Territorialhöfen um 1700.

Die Casualdichtung erweist sich als ein Teilbereich der multimedialen Selbstdarstellung und Prachtentfaltung der höfischen Kultur, und sie ist als solcher der Repräsentation des Regenten als ein idealer Herrscher verpflichtet. Indem die Gedichte diese soziale Rolle zeichnen und auf den konkreten Adressaten projizieren, wird der Fürstenspiegelcharakter panegyrischer Casuallyrik deutlich. Die Interpretationen repräsentativer Einzeltexte zeigen, da theologische, politische und ästhetische Diskussionen der Zeit in panegyrische Casuallyrik Eingang finden. Erweisen sich die Gedichte aus dem Umkreis des Dresdner Hofes als eng an das tradierte Ideal des 'barocken Kriegsheros' gebunden, so rücken in Gottscheds Schaffen Zentralbegriffe der Wolffschen Sozial- und Staatstheorie in den Mittelpunkt der Regentenerziehung. Entgegen der verbreiteten Forschungsansicht wird die Panegyrik Gottscheds und der 'Deutschen Gesellschaft in Leipzig' als konsequente Weiterführung des sozialreformerischen Programms der Frühaufklärung erkennbar.
