Beinahe eine Marginale seines Schaffens, kombiniert er in weiten Teilen die Grundfesten von Freuds psychoanalytischer Erfahrung: er verbindet die Trieblehre mit den kindlichen Lustprinzipien, verweist auf die Traumlehre als ein Bestandteil der Verdrängungsmechanismen in der menschlichen Psyche und destilliert genau aus diesen Erkenntnissen eine psychoökonomische Theorie des Witzes. Während Lustprinzip und Lusthemmung dabei ständig präsent sind, schimmert das psychogenerische Resultat von Freuds Überlegungen nur mit einer Nuance der Wagnis hindurch: als kindlich sei die Komik und das komische Prinzip des Witzes eigentlich aufzufassen - als eine Regression auf die Lustquellen der Kindheit, als eine Freischüttung derer von den Trümmerstücken, die die Erwachsenenmoral hinterlassen hat. Doch obwohl diese Grundthese von den infantilen Ursprüngen von Witz, Komik, später auch Humor latent bis punktuell in Freuds Witz vorhanden sind, wagt er es nur zögerlich seine Vermutung zu äu ern: "Komisch ist das, was sich für den Erwachsenen nicht schickt, so fühle ich mich doch, vermöge meiner ganzen Stellung zum komischen Problem, nicht kühn genug, diesen letzten Satz mit ähnlichem Ernst wie die vorhin aufgestellten zu verteidigen.", schreibt er kurz bevor er seine Abhandlung beendet. Die Tatsache, dass er parallel zu seinem Witz seine Drei Abhandlungen zur Sexualtheorie verfasst hat, scheint auf überraschende Weise durch - wenn er in seinem Witzbuch obszöne und feindselige Tendenzen neben dem kindlichen Unsinn als die Hauptinhalte der gängigen Witze beschreibt, so scheint er direkt aus den kindlichen Lustquellen zu schöpfen, die er in diesen Essays
