April 1944 klingelte in Hitlers Berghof auf dem Ober-salzberg das Telefon. Am Apparat war Joseph Goebbels, der seinem "Führer" zum 55. Geburtstag gratulierte. Er hoffe darauf, dass Hitler noch mindestens drei ig Jahre lebe. "Ginge dieser Wunsch in Erfüllung", so Goebbels, "würde [Hitler] das [Deutsche] Reich zur Weltmacht erheben und es zur Herrscherin über Europa machen." Ob der Propagandaminister an seine eigenen Worte glaubte oder nicht: Er kannte die milli-tärische Lage nur allzu gut. Während die Rote Armee an allen Abschnitten der Ost-front auf dem Vormarsch war, hatten die Westalliierten Teile Italiens erobert und banden dort deutsche Truppen. Die Chancen den Krieg zu gewinnen und "das [Deu-tsche] Reich zur Weltmacht" zu erheben, standen denkbar schlecht. Wer am Endsieg festhielt, tat dies entweder aus Perspektivlosigkeit oder aber aus Glauben an Hitler und dessen Versprechungen. "Führer befiehl, wir folgen", oder "Unsere Mauern brachen, unsere Herzen nicht", verkündeten Schilder in den Trümmern Berlins, die die Wo-chenschau in ihrem Bericht über den 20. April 1944 zeigte. Die Feierlichkeiten zu Hitlers Ehrentag waren im Vergleich zu den Festakten und Paraden früherer Jahre schlicht. "Es ist selbstverständlich, da [sie] dem Ernst der Zeit entsprechend [...] durchgeführt werden", hie es von Seiten der NSDAP. Doch ohne Pomp und Gloria lie en sich Hitlers Mythos und die alte Grö e der Bewegung, nur schwerlich trans-portieren. Einzig die Presse war dazu noch in der Lage, denn Worte waren billig und Papier geduldig.
