Ursache und Folge der Bodenzerstörung: Immer weniger Ackerfläche für immer mehr Menschen. Der Bevölkerungsdruck, erzeugt einen Druck auf die Anbauflächen, da die Erträge einen erhöhten Nahrungsmittelbedarf decken müssen. Um die Ernährungssicherheit für die stetig wachsende Weltbevölkerung zu gewähren bedarf es einer Ausweitung der landwirtschaftlich genutzten Flächen. Doch wie sieht die Realität aus? Kann man die landwirtschaftlich genutzten Flächen, speziell in Trockengebieten, noch ausweiten oder stö t die Nutzbarmachung bereits an ihre ökologischen Grenzen? Ein Teufelskreis. Desertifikation zerstört die Produktivität der landwirtschaftlichen Nutzflächen. Zur Sicherung der Nahrungsmittelversorgung ist der Erhalt fruchtbarer Ackerböden jedoch von vorrangiger Bedeutung, die Menschen sind für die Sicherung Ihrer Grundbedürfnisse auf den Erhalt fruchtbarer Ackerböden angewiesen. Die wachsende Bevölkerung jedoch trägt wesentlich zur Übernutzung bei. Nach Schätzungen der Ernährungs- und Landwirtschafts-organisation der Vereinten Nationen (FAO) wird das verfügbare Ackerland bis zum Jahr 2025 im Vergleich zu 1990 spürbar zurückgehen und der Klimawandel verschärft diese Entwicklung zusätzlich, was dramatische Folgen für die Sicherung der Ernährung haben wird. Desertifikation: eine schleichende Katastrophe.
