(Abdul Rahman, 47, Viehzüchter aus Burkina Faso, zit. in Broschüre der gtz 2006) Der Viehzüchter Abdul Rahman aus Burkina Faso steht repräsentativ für 250 Millionen Menschen, die direkt von der Desertifikation betroffen sind. Eine weitere Milliarde lebt in gefährdeten Gebieten (gtz:2006:3). Am stärksten betroffen sind alle Trockengebiete der Erde, welche circa 40% der gesamten Landmasse ausmachen. Davon sind drei Viertel direkt von den Auswirkungen der Desertifikation beeinflusst (gtz:2006:3). Besonders stark trifft es viele Entwicklungsländer, die sich in Trockengebieten der Erde befinden. Auch das ist der Grund, warum besonders diese Räume zu den ärmsten Regionen der Erde zählen. Geographisch betrachtet finden sich Desertifikationsprozesse nicht nur in Afrika sondern auch in Asien, Europa, Australien und Südamerika. Regionalgeographisch soll ein besonderes Augenmerk auf das südliche Afrika gerichtet werden, welches als räumliches Beispiel ausgewählt wurde, um die Komplexität der Thematik besser zu verdeutlichen. Anhand von zwei Beispielen aus dem südlichen Afrika sollen die komplexen Wechselwirkungen zwischen naturräumlichen Faktoren und menschlichen Eingriffen diskutiert werden. Zu Beginn wird näher auf die Begriffe der Desertifikation und der Bodendegradation eingegangen und ein kleiner Ausschnitt in die, im südlichen Afrika, ablaufenden Prozesse gewährt. Im Weiteren werden die verschiedenen Ursachen und Prozesse der Desertifikation erläutert. Danach sollen die Indikatoren, anhand derer Desertifikation erkannt werden kann, mithilfe einer Tabelle dargestellt werden. Dem
