From Barthes to Baudrillard and from Butler to Bourdieu each chapter addresses design and material culture with reference to theoretical issues and personal analysis. Graphic design ephemera is explored in relation to sub-cultural groups in Rave culture and Modernist Tropical suburban developments on the Australian Eastern seaboard are investigated and considered as desirable urban design for global communities. Interior design history is followed by a consideration of women's bodies and Elle magazine blogs. Running through the book is the theme of cultural and individual identity in our late modern western world and the objects we use that signify who we are and what it all means in both human and design history.

Gillian Davies has lectured and taught Art and Design in high schools, colleges, and Universities from 1970-2008. B Ed.London University 1969 (Art and Education). BA Open University !979 (Architecture and Design). MA Southampton University. 1999. (Design History and Material Culture). PhD research 2000-2004. (Gender Design and Modernism) Southampton Institute, (Nottingham Trent University). Professor of Design History and Director of Decorative arts, in the School of Architecture and Interior Design, SCAD USA, Gilian's doctorate research was in 'Gender Design and Modernism' looking at the work of early twentieth century women designers. Since 2000, Conference papers on Fashion, Representation and Cultural Identity, include the DHS & LIAM in UK and the IIAS Design conference Germany. Design History Society Conferences UK, Monash and RMIT Mebourne, QUT and UQ Queensland and City University Hong Kong.have been delivered. Second Reader for BA Architecture and Design. QUT School Design and Architecture. 2007-9. Various publications in Journals and magazines, 'Mode et Guerre' Conference Papers book, and newspaper articles on design identity and cultural history.
