Despachar un vuelo no solo representa organizar la partida de una aeronave, sino que involucra un sinfín de cuestiones operativas a cargo del personal calificado para tal fin. La figura de despachador de vuelo nació con la necesidad de garantizar la seguridad, tanto de la aeronave como de sus ocupantes y resto de personal en tierra. La OACI (organización de aviación civil internacional) reconoce a la figura de despachador de vuelo como un pilar en la seguridad aérea, y por tal, las empresas aerocomerciales están obligadas a contar con una determinada cantidad de despachadores de vuelo, en función al tamaño de su flota.

Al igual que los pilotos, los despachadores de vuelo deben realizar un curso específico sobre la aeronave que operarán su despacho, limitándose únicamente a poder despachar a esta clase de aeronave en cada operación. En palabras simples, un despachador habilitado para una aeronave Airbus A320, no podría legalmente despachar a una aeronave Boeing B737.

Las tareas del despachador del vuelo son varias e incluyen: análisis de la meteorología, análisis de NOTAMS, análisis del estado de la aeronave y MEL, análisis de la carga en bodegas, pasajeros, equipage, centrado de los pesos, balanceo de la aeronave, determinación de velocidades para el segmento de despegue y demás cálculos operativos. Finalizado el trabajo, el despachador del vuelo le entrega a los pilotos, una carpeta con toda la informacion recabada para que estos puedan tomar la decisión final de operar la aeronave de una u otra forma.

La tarea del despachador del vuelo inicia en la oficina de operaciones de la compañía, usualmente ubicada en cada aeropuerto donde opere la empresa. Hasta el momento en el que el piloto toma el mando de la operación y acepta el despacho propuesto por el despachador, éste ultimo es la autoridad de la operación, quien decide si la aeronave está en condiciones de realizar el vuelo, en función a todas las variables mencionadas.

En este manual abarca una introducción al trabajo del día a día que realizan los despachadores de vuelo, y contempla un análisis de las asignaturas mas importantes para el cargo, como ser: conceptos sobre despacho, peso y balanceo, meteorología y planificación.
