Auf der einen Seite bei Unternehmen jeglicher Branchen zum Schlagwort für diverse strategische Konzepte avanciert, rückte "Die Globalisierung" in jüngster Zeit vor allem durch ihre Gegner ins öffentliche und politische Interesse. Hinzu kommen technische Fortschritte, die Informations- und Kommunikationsmöglichkeiten schaffen, welche noch vor einem Jahrzehnt unvorstellbar waren. Diese Entwicklungen begünstigen einerseits die weltweite Integration, führen andererseits aber auch zu einer steigenden Dynamisierung des Wirtschaftslebens. Zusammen mit der parallel verlaufenden demographischen Entwicklung und sich wandelnden Kundenbedürfnissen vollzieht sich durch die Dynamisierung und Globalisierung der Marktprozesse eine Intensivierung des Wettbewerbs, die in der Folge auch zu Neuordnungen in der Unternehmenslandschaft führt. Allein die Errichtung des gemeinsamen europäischen Wirtschafts- und Währungsraumes, die zweifelsohne unter die Globalisierungsdefinition fällt, ist direkter oder indirekter Auslöser zahlreicher Veränderungsprozesse quer durch alle Geschäftsbereiche. Vorläufiger Höhepunkt für die Versicherungswirtschaft war die Vollendung des europäischen Versicherungsbinnenmarktes am 1.7.1994, als die nationale Kontrolle von Bedingungen und Prämien aufgehoben und der Marktzutritt in vollem Umfang liberalisiert wurde. Vor diesem Hintergrund soll es Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit sein, einen Überblick über die Auswirkungen einer zunehmend globalisierten Welt auf die deutsche Erstversicherungsbranche zu geben. Hierbei werden sowohl unternehmensübergreifende strukturelle Veränderungen als auch Effekte auf Unternehmens- bzw. Geschäftsprozessebene aufgegriffen und ausgewählte Handlungsoptionen erläutert.
