Die deutschen Söldner im Italien des Trecento waren den Zeitgenossen eine verha te Plage - und vielleicht galten sie auch manchem professionellen Historiker als eher unsympathische Erscheinungen, jedenfalls mochte sich niemand in den letzten sechzig Jahren intensiver mit ihnen beschäftigen. Zwar war der Forschung bewu t, da für die Menschen des 14. Jahrhunderts der Krieg und seine Krieger allgegenwärtige Erfahrungen waren. Zwar hat man die Bedeutung des Krieges für die mittelalterliche Gesellschaft selten in Zweifel gezogen, doch besonders häufig untersucht hat man dieses Phänomen deshalb nicht.

Die vorliegende Untersuchung setzt bei diesem Defizit an. Ausgehend von neuen Quellenfunden in den Archiven Nord- und Mittelitaliens werden zunächst die Rahmenbedingungen des internationalen italienischen Soldmarktes des 14. Jahrhunderts vorgestellt. Darauf aufbauend werden die Lebenssituationen der Söldner in Krieg und Frieden beschrieben. Eine sozialgeschichtliche Analyse der deutschen Söldner schlie t sich an, die nach regionaler und sozialer Herkunft fragt. Weitere Kapitel beschreiben Themen wie >Sold und Beute
