Der Band ergänzt die zahlreichen deutschen Sprachgeschichten durch eine Darstellung der Wertungen des Deutschen aus zeitgenössischer Sicht. Zu Beginn, im 8. Jahrhundert, erscheint dieses den Autoren als barbarisch, ungeeignet zum Lobe Gottes wie zum Dichten. Erst im gro en Ringen mit ihr entsteht eine Übersetzungssprache, ein für den religiösen Gebrauch geeignetes Ausdrucksmittel.

Mit dem Ausgriff auf fremde Vorbilder im Hochmittelalter entwickelt sich eine Literatursprache, die sowohl den sog. 'heiligen Sprachen', dem Hebräischen, Griechischen und Lateinischen, wie den zeitgenössischen Kultursprachen ebenbürtig wird. Die zunehmende Achtung der Volkssprache seit der Reformation bereitet den Weg für die Aufwertung zu einer Hauptsprache in der Barockzeit, später zur Weltsprache. Die Bemühungen um die Kultivierung des Deutschen seit der Aufklärung gipfeln in der Klassik, die von vielen als Höhepunkt in der deutschen Sprachentwicklung gesehen wird. Die Romantik erkennt die Klang- und damit Gefühlswirkungen der deutschen Sprache, der Realismus ihre Fähigkeiten zum Wirklichkeitsbezug.

Mit dem Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts beginnen Auseinandersetzungen um die Pflege des Erreichten, um den Erhalt von Reinheit und Schönheit. Das Buch sollte in der universitären wie schulischen Lehre eingesetzt werden. Es ist aber vor allem auch für Sprachfreunde geschrieben und soll eine gesicherte historische Basis bieten für die Diskussion um 'Würde und Ehre des Deutschen', aber auch um den angeblichen Verfall.
