Die Erfindung des Computers durch den deutschen Bauingenieur Konrad Zuse führte zur wissenschaftlich-technischen Revolution der Neuzeit. Aus den USA kamen die ersten für eine kommerzielle Massenverarbeitung geeigneten Gro computer nach 1960 auf den Markt. In der DDR wurde der erste elektronische Rechenautomat von Zeiss, der ZRA1, 1960 vorgestellt. Nach der Teilnahme an einem ZRA1-Programmierlehrgang von 1962 bei der Akademie für Wissenschaften, wurden erste Entwicklungsarbeiten zur möglichen Computeranwendung im Berliner Bauwesen durchgeführt. Im Ergebnis dieser Vorarbeiten kam es zur Gründung des Gemeinschafts- Rechenzentrums ZOD Bauwesen Berlin, am 1.Januar 1967. Die Zuordnung zum bezirksgeleiteten Bauwesen von Berlin, mit seinen 55.000 Beschäftigten, darunter ca. 3.000 Architekten und Ingenieure in drei gro en Projektierungsbüros, sollte sich für die Entwicklungsarbeiten positiv auswirken. Das IBM-System 360/40 wurde seit 1964 angeboten, beim ZOD wurde es im Januar 1968 in Betrieb genommen. Bestandteil des Liefervertrages war die Bereitstellung von Anwendungssoftware, die Durchführung von Programmier-Lehrgängen, die Weiterbildung von Wartungsingenieuren, sowie die Beratung und Unterstützung beim praktischen Betrieb. Von Anbeginn an gab es gro e Vorbehalte seitens der alles bestimmenden Partei gegenüber den Arbeiten mit dem Computer. Die rasch sichtbaren positiven Anwendungsergebnisse lie en dies aber relativ gelassen betrachten. So wurde die Lohn- und Gehaltsrechnung innerhalb eines halben Jahres von der vorhandenen Lochkartenberechnung, auf die mit einem Bruchteil der bisherigen Aufwendungen verbundene, digitale Verarbeitung umgestellt, für alle 55.000 Beschäftigten. Die permanent bestehenden politischen Probleme wurden von mir zu Gunsten des Betriebes von den Beschäftigten ferngehalten. Erst 20 Jahre später hat Michail Gorbatschow mit seiner Perestroika diesen als Errungenschaft der Oktoberrevolution existierenden Zustand verändert.
