Malawi is a small country with great but unrealised potential. Following a golden era in the 1970s, successive governments have struggled to deliver sustained economic growth and prosperity. In Development Matters: Malawi at the Crossroads, Harvard and Oxford University educated economist Taz Chaponda explores the following questions. Can Malawi achieve meaningful development in our lifetime or shall it remain at the bottom of the global development tables? Why has political pluralism failed to deliver social progress, and who is driving the development agenda? As Malawi turns fifty, the author provides a clear agenda for the future.

Taz Chaponda is a development economist working in the areas of economics and business consulting, with a focus on infrastructure finance. He has worked in the largest business centres in Africa, as an adviser to governments, companies and multilateral institutions. Taz has held a number of roles delivering economic and investment advice. In South Africa, he worked as Head of the national Budget Office under Minister Trevor Manuel and Director General Lesetja Kganygo. He was also Head of the government's central unit for Public-Private Partnerships. In Malawi, Taz was the World Bank's Country Office Economist and also advised Parliament on budget and finance issues. Prior to that, he worked in the private sector, as a consultant for Bain & Company, a leading global strategy consulting firm. In this role, he worked with clients in the telecommunications, banking and airline sectors. More recently, Taz worked in Lagos providing advice to the Lagos State Governor's PPP office. He is currently Head of infrastructure advisory at Genesis Analytics, a leading economic advisory firm based in South Africa. Taz studied economics at Harvard University and the University of Oxford. He has an MBA from INSEAD Business School.
