This book is the first in a series of three volumes looking at the history of all manner of strange aerial phenomena and unidentified flying objects over Devon, covering everything from Jack-o'-lanterns (Will-o'-the-wisps) earthlights and ball lightning, to the phantom airship scares of the early 20th century and the 'flying saucer' craze of the 1950s. Each volume is an in-depth look at how these various things were perceived and interpreted at the time, examining the scientific or possible mundane explanations for them, and the mythology, folklore and popular cultural beliefs that were associated with them.

In this first volume we'll be looking at those mysterious low-level lights known as Jack-o'-lanterns (or Will-o'-the-wisps) and tales of fiery flying 'dragons' and other legends, and how these all became woven into local folklore (and curiously that of the mining industry as well). We'll also be exploring some of the various theories and scientific explanations for these phenomena (burning marsh gas, earthlights and electrical phenomena etc.) and explore the idea that some of these might actually be supernatural or 'living lights', some sort of non-human intelligence (luminous life forms, or entities, that are unknown to science). We'll also see how the continued presence of these mysterious lights into the 20th century (and indeed to this day) has contributed to the modern belief in UFOs (alien visitors) and how they have acquired a whole new meaning as they have become associated in contemporary folklore with UFO activity.

Highlights of this volume include:

- A history of Will-o'-the-wisps and other weird lights and orbs in Devon looking at the scientific explanations for them, and the case for some of them being supernatural or 'intelligent light-forms'.

- The remarkable and little-known story of how West Country miners discovered that mysterious lights near the ground could lead them to untapped reserves of metal ores, and the considerable wealth that directly resulted from this extraordinary way of prospecting.

- A fresh, new objective look at the famous 'flying cross' UFO incident in North Devon in 1967 (when two police officers chased a UFO for several miles) that leads to some surprising conclusions.

- And... Close encounters of the 5th and 14th century kind!
