Paul Böckmann (1899-1987), bekannt vor allem durch seine Forschungen zu Goethe, Schiller, Hölderlin und durch seine 1949 erschienene Formgeschichte der deutschen Dichtung, hat den geplanten zweiten Band der Formgeschichte nicht mehr schreiben können. Er enthält sechzehn Aufsätze zu Grillparzer, Stifter, Storm, Fontane, zur Bedeutung Nietzsches für die moderne Literatur (mit einem ungedruckten Brief Th. Manns), zu G. Hauptmann, George, Rilke, Th. Mann, Hesse, Wedekind, Brecht und Benn, zur Lyrik des 19. und des 20. Jahrhunderts und zum Drama des Expressionismus. Die Sammlung der Aufsätze, die noch auf einen Plan des Verfassers zurückgeht, wird eingeleitet durch ein wissenschaftsgeschichtliches Portrait und ergänzt durch einen Anhang, der einige wissenschaftsgeschichtlich-autobiographische Texte, eine umfassende Bibliographie der Schriften Paul Böckmanns sowie eine Zusammenstellung der von ihm in mehr als vierzig Jahren abgehaltenen Vorlesungen und Seminare und der von ihm betreuten Dissertationen umfa t.
