the Dictionary of banking has been compiled in order to provide in one volume the means of obtaining informations with the minimum of trouble upon any subject connected with the business of banking. Hitherto it has been a continual difficulty with many bank officials to know exactly where to turn for information upon certain subjects; But it is hoped and believed that the present volume will meet this difficulty and that it will enable anyone to find in its pages a ready and reliable reference whenever the occasion arises. The book is furnished with many cross references and at the end of each leading subject e.g., Accounts, Bankruptcy, Bill of Exchange, Cheque, Companies, Insurane, Mortgage, Stamp Duties, Stock Exchange, Title Deeds, will be found a list of the principal articles connected with that subject which should facilitate the discovery of any particular point.

William Thomson was born on 26 June 1824 in Belfast. He was taught by his father, a professor of mathematics. In 1832, the family moved to Glasgow where Thomson attended university from the age of 10, subsequently studying at Cambridge and Paris universities. In 1846 he became professor of natural philosophy in Glasgow, a post he would hold for more than 50 years. He was a pioneer in many different fields, particularly electromagnetism and thermodynamics. Together with Faraday, he was responsible for the introduction of the concept of an electromagnetic field. Throughout his work Thomson's overriding goal was the practical utilisation of science. He achieved fame through his work on submarine telegraphy, a major practical problem of the day.
