Je n'ai rien � ajouter ici � ce que j'ai dit dans l'avertissement de la premi�re �dition de cet ouvrage, sur les motifs qui m'ont d�termin� � lui donner � peu pr�s la forme & le titre tant d�cri� de Dictionnaire, si ce n'est que, quoique je sois persuad� qu'on peut faire de vrais & de tr�s utiles Dictionnaires sur tous les objets de nos connaissances, j'avoue que je n'ai ni la tournure d'esprit, ni les talents n�cessaires pour faire un bon ouvrage en ce genre. Je conviens donc que celui-ci n'est point un vrai Dictionnaire, ou que, si l'on veut le consid�rer comme tel, c'en est un mauvais, parce que, dans l'�tat o� j'ai pu le mettre, il a tous les d�fauts attach�s � cette forme, sans en avoir les avantages, qui consistent principalement en une nomenclature tr�s compl�te, jointe � une enti�re exactitude pour les renvois. Il aurait �t� beaucoup mieux sans doute, par cette raison, de lui donner un autre titre, cela, par exemple, de Notions g�n�rales sur la Chimie, sous lequel M. Poerner l'a publi� dans la traduction qu'il s'est donn� la peine d'en faire en allemand, mais, outre les inconv�nients qu'il y a � changer le nom sous lequel un livre a �t� connu pendant plusieurs ann�es, celui de Dictionnaire servira au moins de pr�texte ou d'excuse pour le d�sordre que je n'ai pu �viter, apr�s m'y �tre engag� comme je l'�tais par la premi�re �dition. Je prie donc qu'on ne consid�re cet ouvrage que comme un recueil de d�finitions & de dissertations sur les principaux objets de la chimie, distribu�es � peu pr�s suivant le rang des lettres de l'alphabet. (...) Il m'aurait �t� bien facile de grossir cet ouvrage encore infiniment plus qu'il ne l'est, sans me donner pour cela presque aucune peine. Si je n'avais cherch� qu'� faire un gros livre, je n'avais qu'� copier ou extraire une grande quantit� de notes & d'additions jointes � la premi�re �dition, dans les traductions qui en ont �t� faites en allemand & en anglais.
