Gegenstand der Arbeit sind die Erläuterung des Begriffs Region, Betrachtungen der Herkunftsregion, der Identität an sich und der eigenen Identität sowie damit im Zusammenhang stehende wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Fragestellungen des Fachs Volkskunde, europäische Ethnologie und Kulturanthropologie. In der Literatur finden sich zahlreiche Definitionen für den Begriff Region. Häufig werden räumliche Einheiten zu homogenen Regionen zusammengefasst, die von anderen abgegrenzt und unterschieden werden. Diese Homogenität nimmt entweder Bezug auf geografische Gegebenheiten oder aber auf beispielsweise kulturelle, sprachliche oder religiöse Gemeinsamkeiten der Bevölkerung. Bundesländer, Bezirke und Gemeinden sind kleinräumige, auch politisch-rechtliche, funktional gestaltete Verwaltungseinheiten. Naturräume unterstehen geomorphologischen, geologischen, hydrologischen und bodenkundlichen Kriterien. Auch Zuordnungen nach dem Klima (Klimazone) oder nach der Flora werden vorgenommen. Für naturräumliche Regionen bezeichnend ist die Unschärfe der Ränder im Kleinma stab, so kann ein Gebiet von mehreren geologischen Zonen geprägt sein. In topografisch strikt untergliederten Räumen decken sich landschaftliche, kulturelle und politische Regionen vornehmlich (etwa Täler-Talschaften-Gemeindegebiete), und auch die politische Grenzziehung von Staaten folgt orografischen Linien (Flüsse, Wasserscheiden). Gebietseinheiten können unter dem Aspekt verschiedenster Indikatoren zu funktionalen Regionen zusammengefasst sein, also besonders eng in Verbindung zueinander stehen beziehungsweise abgegrenzt sein.
