Im Gegensatz zu den Neuphilologien zeigte die Altphilologie bis in die j�ngste Zeit wenig Interesse an den griechischen Fabelsammlungen der �sopika und des Babrios sowie an den lateinischen des Phaedrus, Avian und Romulus. Bis in die 1990er Jahre begn�gte man sich weitgehend damit, vermeintliche Sozialkritik der einzelnen Autoren herauszulesen sowie antike Versionen einzelner Fabeln mit mittelalterlichen und neuzeitlichen unter folkloristischem Aspekt zu vergleichen. Mit seiner Einf�hrung von 1993 versuchte Niklas Holzberg erstmals, alle erhaltenen Sammlungen sowie die Fabeln, die zahlreiche Autoren von 700 v. Chr. bis in die Sp�tantike zur Exemplifizierung einer Aussage in ihre Texte einlegten, auf der Basis der modernen Literaturwissenschaft zu w�rdigen. Nun h�tte die Einzelanalyse der jeweiligen Fabeln und Fabelb�cher folgen m�ssen, und sie setzte auch zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts ein, aber zun�chst nur vereinzelt, weshalb die Einf�hrung 2001 unver�ndert neu aufgelegt und, 2002 in englischer Fassung erschienen, 2012 erneut nachgedruckt wurde. Inzwischen sind aber so viele neue Erkenntnisse �ber die literarische Bedeutung der Gattung gewonnen worden, dass eine grundlegende �berarbeitung und Aktualisierung der Einf�hrung erforderlich wurde, die nun als vierte Auflage mit kommentierten Literaturangaben vorliegt.
