Damit sind Sätze gemeint, die eine anerkannte Meinung zum Ausdruck bringen. Indem sie durch eine Autorität Anerkennung zugesprochen bekommen, unterscheiden sich endoxa von Sätzen die "blo " eine Meinung (doxa) vertreten. Diese Autorität wird entweder qualitativ oder quantitativ begründet. Demnach ist ein Satz ein endoxon, wenn er entweder von vielen Leuten angenommen wird, oder von wenigen, dafür aber besonders angesehenen Leuten. Durch ihre autoritative Legitimation gewinnen sie für Aristoteles an Interesse, weil sie in die Nähe von beweiskräftigem Wissen über eine Sache rücken. Sie haben nicht den gleichen Anspruch an Richtigkeit und Wahrheit wie ein Beweis, aber in ihren jeweiligen Gebieten können sie ähnliche Funktionen erfüllen. Das Anliegen meiner Hausarbeit besteht darin, die Bedeutung der endoxa in der aristotelischen Philosophie zu untersuchen. Dabei setzte ich drei besondere Schwerpunkte. Zunächst werde ich auf das erste Buch der Topik eingehen und die Gründung der Dialektik auf endoxa besprechen. In diesem Buch der Topik geht Aristoteles erläuternd auf die endoxa ein, und erklärt ihren Nutzen für die dialektische Deduktion. Der zweite Schwerpunkt ist die Anwendung der endoxa in der Ethik. G.E.L. Owen entdeckte, dass mit den in der Nikomachischen Ethik angesprochenen phainomena, in erster Linie nicht empirische Tatsachen gemeint sind, sondern die endoxa, als Ausdruck von Erkenntnis. Jonathan Barnes geht auf dieses Problem ein, und konzipiert eine aristotelische Methode der endoxa, die ich besprechen möchte.
