Die Wahrnehmung von Architektur - sei es eines Innenraumes, eines Gebaudes oder einer ganzen Stadt - ist untrennbar mit Bewegung im Raum verbunden. Dies ergibt sich aus der Tatsache, dass Architektur in der Regel nicht von einem einzelnen Stand- und Blickpunkt aus, sondern in Form dynamischer Perzeptionsprozesse erfasst wird, d. h. wahrend der Annaherung an ein Gebaude bzw. eine Raumsituation, beim Betreten oder beim Durchschreiten. Eine architektonisch qualitatvoll gestaltete Wegefuhrung kann sich dabei den Bewegungstrieb des Menschen zunutze machen, die Lust durch immer neue Standpunkte eine Folge von wechselnden Bildern zu erleben und so mit der Zeit den Raum in allen seinen Facetten zu begreifen. Um Architektur sinnlich erfahren zu konnen, muss sie demnach begangen, mussen Standpunkte verandert werden. Der Erschliessung von Architektur und damit dem Weg durch die gebaute Umwelt kommt fur das Raumverstandnis somit eine zentrale Bedeutung zu. Wahrend diese in der Kunst- und Architekturgeschichte fur die Architektur der Neuzeit erfolgreich untersucht wurde und auch zu einem neuen Raumverstandnis beigetragen hat, ist dies fur die Antike, weitgefasst von der Fruhgeschichte bis in die Spatantike, bislang selten in einer diachronen, kulturubergreifenden Betrachtungsweise erforscht worden. Mit den 31 Beitragen des Band 11 der Diskussionen zur Archaologischen Bauforschung wird der Versuch unternommen, diesen Ansatz auch auf antike Architektur anzuwenden. Es wird untersucht, wie Volumen positioniert und zueinander in Beziehung gesetzt werden, um Raume zu gestalten und Bewegungsablaufe zu lenken, wie Innenraum und Aussenraum isoliert oder perforiert werden, um eine gegenseitige Durchdringung zu ermoglichen bzw. Wege zu versperren und so Bewegungsablaufe zu strukturieren, mit welchen gestalterischen Mitteln Bewegung in Raumen be- und entschleunigt, gefordert oder in sonstiger Weise beeinflusst wird, und in welchem Zusammenhang Nutzungs- und Bewegungskonzepteunterschiedlicher Anlagen stehen. Die architektonische Gestaltung von Wegen wird dabei als eine historische Quelle verstanden, deren Untersuchung zur Identifikation und Rekonstruktion der Erlebnisqualitaten antiker Architektur beitragen kann. Das Phanomen Weg wird in unterschiedlicher Skalierung schwerpunktmassig anhand antiker Architektur im Mittelmeerraum, aber auch anhand von Baubefunden aus dem vorderasiatischen Neolithikum, dem Alten Orient, dem pharaonischen Agypten sowie dem prakolumbischen Sudamerika und aus islamischer Zeit thematisiert.
