Swami Ramdas (1884-1963) spielte im Indien des 20. Jh. neben Ramana Maharshi, Aurobindo und Anandamayi Ma im spirituellen Bereich eine zentrale Rolle, ist hierzulande jedoch weitgehend unbekannt. Bis zum Alter von 38 führte er ein normales Familien- und Berufsleben. Dann gab er alles auf und entschied sich für ein Leben als Wandermönch. Er war ein Bhakta, d.h. Gottliebender, und pflegte eine sehr persönliche Beziehung zu seiner Gottheit Ram (Rama). Er gab sich Ihm völlig hin, mit allen daraus resultierenden Konsequenzen. Sein Weg war die Wiederholung des Namens Gottes mit dem Mantra "OM Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram", das sein Vater ihm gegeben hatte. Befreit von Angst und Sorge und alle Menschen und Tiere als die Gestalt seiner geliebten Gottheit betrachtend, wanderte er durch ganz Indien. Von seinen abenteuerlichen Reisen berichtet er in seiner dreiteiligen Autobiografie, die diesem Buch zugrunde liegt. Der Leser taucht in die für ihn unbekannte Welt der indischen Sadhus (Wandermönche) ein, die Ramdas mit viel Humor schildert. Ende der 20er Jahre gründete er in Kerala den Anandashram, zuerst in Kasaragod, den er wieder aufgeben musste, dann in Kanhangad, der bis heute besteht. Es schlossen sich ihm die Witwe Krishnabai und Swami Satchidananda an, die er beide unterwies und die eine bedeutende Rolle im Ashram spielten. Krishnabai führte den Ashram nach Ramdas' Tod weiter. In den 50ern unternahm Ramdas mit Krishnabai und Swami Satchidananda eine Weltreise, die ihn u.a. auch nach Deutschland führte. Besonders in seinem Bericht über die Weltreise sind seine Lehren in Gesprächen und Reden enthalten. Man kann von Ramdas, wie von allen gro en spirituellen Meistern, sagen, dass sein Leben seine Lehre war. Seine Vision bestand in der Einheit der Menschen, unabhängig von Geschlecht, Herkunft, Kaste oder Religion, da Gott in jedem Lebewesen wohnt und sich in der gesamten Schöpfung manifestiert.
