Die vorliegende Arbeit uber die Behandlung innerer Krankheiten mit radioaktiven Substanzen wurde im Juli 1914 beendet. Der Ausbruch des Krieges hat die Drucklegung bisher verhindert. Schon in der Zeit vor dem Kriege hatte sich meiner Ansicht nach die neue Behandlungsmethode in der inneren Medizin nicht genugend durchgesetzt. Die uberwiegende Mehrzahl der Internisten stand ihr skeptisch gegenuber; man betrachtete sie als Modesache, ohne eigentlich uber- zeugt zu sein, daB damit fUr die Heilkunde ein neues rkungsvones Gebiet erschlossen worden ist. Der Mangel an ausfiihrlichen, mit einem groBen Kranken- geschichtenmaterial ausgestatteten Publikationen durfte daran zum Teil schuld gewesen sein. Ich hatte aUs diesem Grunde meine eigene Erfahrung stark in den V ordergrund gestellt und zahlreiche, zum Teil ausfiihrliche Kranken- geschichten in den Text eingeschoben. Ich hatte ferner auch den biologischen . Teil der Arbeit sehr ausfUhrlich behandelt, weil ich glaubte, daB es auch dem Fernerstehenden schwer sein wird, den Gedanken abzuweisen, daB die radio- aktiven Substanzen in der Heilkunde mit Erfolg anzuwenden sind, wenn er die so mannigfaltigen und tiefgreifenden biologischen Wirkungen kennen lernt, die sie im tieri8chen Organismus hervorzubringen imstande sind. Eine be- sonders genaue Durcharbeitung erfordflrte ferner die Dosierungsfrage, denn der Umstand, daB die neue Behandlungsmethode eine weite Verbreitung fand, bevor diese wichtige Frage entsprechend geklart war, trug meines Erachtens die Hauptschuld daran, daB das anfanglich lebhafte Interesse bald wieder erkaltete.
