Im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Studie stehen die in H. Manns "Der Untertan" aufgedeckten ökonomischen, sozialpsychischen und soziokulturellen Spannungen und Widersprüche im raschen Übergang von der traditionellen Stände- zur modernen Klassengesellschaft. Dieser Spannung inhärent ist das auffällige Mi verhältnis von Pessimismus auf kurze Frist und längerfristigem Optimismus, einem Realismus der Diagnose und einem Idealismus der Prognose, welches für Manns politisches Dilemma am Scheideweg der Revolution von 1918/19 und bis zum Niedergang der Weimarer Republik konstitutiv wurde.

Aus dem elementaren Widerspruch zwischen kapitalistischer Wirklichkeit und dem universalistischen Anspruch, der zu dem Entwurf einer konfliktfreien Bürgergesellschaft antreibt, ist das problematische Umkehrverhältnis von Gesellschaftskritik und utopischer Erwartungshaltung bei Mann zu erklären. Die Berufung auf eine idealisierte französische Geschichte z.B. gibt jenen 'Ersatz-Sonderweg' zu erkennen, der Manns Schwierigkeit verrät, mit gesellschaftlichen und politischen Modernisierungsprozessen im wilhelminischen Deutschland und in der Weimarer Republik zurecht zu kommen. Die Einsichten des "Untertan" in die Verschränkungen von Statusunsicherheit und Geltungsbedürfnis, bürgerlichem Individualismus und Sozialdarwinismus waren spätestens seit 1918/19 der utopischen Erwartung einer konfliktfreien Bürgergesellschaft gro enteils gewichen. So konnte eines der folgenreichsten Kontinuitätsmomente im Übergang vom Deutschen Kaiserreich zur Weimarer Republik nicht zum Vorschein kommen. Denn Mann verkannte, da gerade die 'vormodernen' Sicherheiten, die die NSDAP verhie , sich mehrdeutiger auswirkten, als seine 'Geist-Macht'-Dichotomie wahrhaben konnte und wollte. Ein Demokratieverständnis, das auf der einfachen Antinomie zwischen den alten konservativen Machteliten einerseits und einem politisch unbedarften, doch auf längere Sicht durch Vermittlung der Intellektuellen 'belehrbaren' Bürgertum fu te, war nicht dazu angetan, den Blick für sozialpsychische Krisenerscheinungen in den eigenen bürgerlichen Reihen zu schärfen. Gerade an der von H. Mann weitgehend verleugneten innerbürgerlichen Spaltung machte die NSDAP den Dreh- und Angelpunkt für ihre 'Mittelstandspolitik' ausfindig.
