Dieser Begriff soll hierbei verstanden werden als Verdichtungen von Handlungsabfolgen auf zweierlei Arten: Zum einen kann dies durch die Beschleunigung der einzelnen Aktionen erreicht werden, zum anderen jedoch auch durch das gleichzeitige Ausführen mehrerer Tätigkeiten auf einmal (sog. Multitasking). Zur Untersuchung dieser Phänomene sind objektive wie subjektive Erhebungen notwendig. Die objektiven Untersuchungen beschränken sich zumeist auf relativ einfach zu erhebende Daten, da sich gezeigt hat, dass die quantitative Methodenforschung an ihre Grenzen gerät, wenn es darum geht Empfindungen wie Zeitnot repräsentativ zu erheben. Insbesondere die Interpretation der ausgewerteten Ergebnisse kann hierbei häufig zu falschen Gesamtergebnissen führen. Daher ist es in dieser Untersuchung vor allem Sache der qualitativen Methoden, geeignete Daten zu erheben. Ein besonderes Augenmerk soll hierbei auch auf den Faktor Freizeit verwendet werden, wobei hier zwischen freier Zeit und tatsächlicher Freizeit unterschieden werden soll. Die Tatsache, dass Menschen ihre Freizeit niedriger schätzen, als diese tatsächlich ist, hängt laut Rosa mit der Ausfüllung derselbigen durch eine Vielzahl von notwendigen Tätigkeiten zusammen. Die Reihenfolge der ausgeführten Tätigkeiten spielt eine weitere Rolle: Durch das Gefühl sich zu etwas verpflichtet zu fühlen, wie z.B. Sport zu treiben oder sich zu bilden und die tatsächlich ausgeführten Tätigkeiten entsteht oftmals ein Spannungsverhältnis. Die für erstrebenswert gehaltenen Tätigkeiten weichen, aufgrund des Anpassungszwangs (s.u.), oftmals weniger erstrebenswer
