Diese und viele andere im heutigen Zusammenleben selbstverständlichen Normen und Werte für das Sprechen wurden von den theologischen Fachschriftstellern des Mittelalters theoretisch erarbeitet und seit dem 15. Jahrhundert über die verschiedenen zeitgenössischen Medien (Predigt, Lied, Flugblatt, Buch etc.) und nahezu alle literarischen Gattungen (Gedicht, Erzählung, Erbauungsbuch, Reisebericht, Enzyklopädie etc.) in die breite Bevölkerung getragen.

Die vorliegende Studie sichtet erstmals die fast unübersehbare Masse an literarischen Quellen zur "Bezähmung der Zunge" vom späten 15. bis zur Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts. Die Texte werden aus der Perspektive der Zivilisationstheorie in ihrer Partizipation an der umfassenden Christianisierung Europas während der frühen Neuzeit analysiert und auf ihre spezifischen Strategien zur Vermittlung von Normen für das Sprechen hin untersucht. Nicht zuletzt wird einer der bekanntesten Texte der Barockliteratur, Andreas Gryphius' erster "Reyen der Höflinge" aus dem Trauerspiel "Leo Armenius", unter Rückgriff auf Ansätze der Intertextualitätstheorie auf breiter Quellengrundlage neu interpretiert.
