Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich Politik - Politische Systeme - Historisches, Note: 2,0, Georg-August-Universit t G ttingen (Sozialwissenschaftliches Institut), Veranstaltung: Das Ende der sozialliberalen Koalition und der Beginn der ra Kohl vor 25 Jahren, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Viele politische Entscheidungen wurden in der jungen Bundesrepublik bis in die 1970er-Jahre immer wieder in Frage gestellt und diskutiert. Doch kaum eine unter ihnen f hrte zu so konfliktreichen und kontroversen Situationen im innenpolitischen und gesellschaftlichen Bereich wie der NATO-Doppelbeschluss vom Dezember 1979. Das Programm wurde als Reaktion auf die Aufr stung der Sowjetunion und dem damit entstandenen milit rischen Kr fteungleichgewicht zwischen Ost und West aufgestellt. Das Ultimatum an die stliche Weltmacht sah eine Modernisierung und Verst rkung der nuklearen Systeme in Westeuropa und vor allem in Deutschland vor, falls die UdSSR nicht auf die Abr stungsverhandlungen einging. Innerhalb der deutschen Gesellschaft entstanden daraufhin starke Proteste. Die seit Mitte der 1950er-Jahre in den Abgrund versunkene Friedensbewegung erstarkte aus Angst vor einem Atomkrieg auf deutschem Boden. Man protestierte gegen den fortschreitenden R stungswettlauf und forderte eine Reduzierung der Nuklearwaffen auf beiden Seiten. Der Gedanke an einen nuklearen Overkill lie viele Menschen in der Bundesrepublik erschrecken. Auch innerhalb der eigenen Partei des deutschen Bundeskanzlers stieg die Kritik am Vorhaben des NATO-Doppelbeschlusses. Helmut Schmidt hielt aber an seiner Strategie des Gleichgewichts fest, unterst tze weiterhin die Entwicklung des Doppelbeschlusses und stie dabei immer fter auf rege Kritik. Dass Schmidt den Beschluss bef rwortete und ihn scheinbar in seiner Londoner IISS-Rede vorformulierte, war f r viele Menschen und Politiker unverst ndlich.
