LUTHY Vorwort Die diffusen Hirnsklerosen oder Leukodystrophien waren im Laufe der letzten Jahrzehnte trotz ihrer Seltenheit der Gegenstand intensiver Forschungen. Das riihrt davon her, daB sich bei diesen Krankheiten allgemein giiltige GesetzmaBigkeiten der Abbauprozesse im Nervensystem besonders gut erfassen lassen. AuBerdem hoffte man immer wieder, durch das Studium der diffusen Sklerosen auch AufschlUsse Uber die viel haufigere multiple Sklerose zu gewinnen. Kliniker, Neuropathologen, Neurophysiologen und Chemiker haben sich mit den diffusen Sklerosen befaBt. Dadurch wurde unsere Kenntnis einzelner Forme- besonders der metachromatischen und der Krabbeschen Form der Leukodystrophi- erheblich vertieft und erweitert. Aber auch das Wissen iiber die anderen Formen wurde in den letzten Jahren stark bereichert. Dadurch ist beim praktisch tatigen Padiater, Neurologen, Neuropathologen und beim Neurochemiker ein BedUrfnis nach Oberblick entstanden, dem die vorliegende monographische Darstellung entgegenkommen 5011."
