Am 19. November 1886 wurde ich, im Auftrage des Reichs- kanzlers Fiirsten Bismarck, mundlich durch den Geheimen Legationsrat Dr. Kayser und einige Tage spater schriftlich durch den Grafen Rantzau aufgefordert, meine Thatigkeit del' Begrundung einer lebensfahigen Deutsch -Ostafrikanischen Ge- sellschaft zuzuwenden. Die Kommandit-Gesellschaft, Carl Peters & Genossen, war zwar schon, mit gleichen Zielen, anderthalb Jahre fruher, am 2. April 1885 gegriindet und ihr die Rechte aus dem, ursprunglich den Herren Dr. Carl Peters und Grafen Behr-Bandelin, als V orsitzende der Gesellschaft fur deutsche Kolonisation, ausgestellten Kaiserlichen Schutzbrief vom 27. Fe- bruar 1885 ubertragen worden. Allein trotz des hochherzigen Vorgehens des urn die Einleitung unserer Kolonialbestrebungen hochverdienten Herrn Karl von del' Heydt mit einer sehr bedeutenden Zeichnung, ruckte die Bildung einer finanzkrafti- gen Gesellschaft, welche in del' Lage gewesen ware, gleichsam die Regierung von Deutsch-Ostafrika in die Hand zu nehmen IV und sich
