Die Frage nach der Zukunft ist von besonderem Interesse, da das Kreditinstitut vom Finanzstabilitätsrat (FSB) als global systemrelevant eingestuft wurde und damit einen ma geblichen Einfluss auf die deutsche & europäische Volkswirtschaft sowie die Weltwirtschaft hat. "Banking is necessary, Banks are not" - nie war dieses Zitat von Bill Gates aktueller als heute. Wie viel Wahrheit in dieser gewagten und provokanten Hypothese steckt, wird sich in den nächsten Jahren herausstellen. Banken stehen vor gewaltigen Herausforderungen. Mit Google, Facebook, Apple und anderen IT-Konzern kommen neue Wettbewerber und Technologien (z.B. Künstliche Intelligenz, Robotik oder Blockchain) auf den Markt. Geschwächt durch die Finanz- und Eurokrise, beeinflusst durch immer stärkere regulatorische Auflagen leiden sie zudem an einem Margenverfall durch die langanhaltende Niedrigzinsphase. Christian Sewing (Vorstandsvorsitzender der Deutschen Bank AG) erklärte auf der Hauptversammlung am 24. Mai 2018: "Wir [die Deutsche Bank AG] wollen relevant, exzellent, innovativ, stabil und vertrauenswürdig sein".
