Populismus als Droge - diese bildhafte Zuordnung ist bewusst gewählt. In der nachstehenden Studie wird Populismus als ein Muster der Politikvermittlung beschrieben, das bei dem angesprochenen Personenkreis Wirkungen erzeugt oder erzeugen soll, die ebenso betäubend wie berauschend sind und mitunter auch süchtig machen. Erfolgreich vermarkten lässt sich Populismus deshalb, weil die gesellschaftliche Anfälligkeit hierfür in der Regel vergleichsweise gro ist. In allen Parteien sind daher Politiker versucht, populistisch zu agieren. Deutschland und deutsche Politik stellen in dieser Hinsicht keine Ausnahme dar. Die hohe Wirkmächtigkeit populistisch aufbereiteter Politikvermittlung ist indes eine stete Belastung für Demokratien. Denn Populisten wecken gezielt Ressentiments, schüren Vorurteile und spitzen tatsächliche oder vermeintliche Problemlagen dramatisierend zu. Ängste und Aggressionen lassen für eine dif- renzierende Wahrnehmung komplizierter Sachverhalte wenig Raum. Wenn aber Affekte rationale Urteilskraft verdrängen, steht eine Grundvoraussetzung de- kratischer politischer Kultur infrage. Populismus ist das krasse Gegenteil von politischer Aufklärung. Im Folgenden stellen wir, in kritischer Absicht, kennzeichnende Stereo- pen des Populismus vor. Hierbei gehen wir in zwei Schritten vor: Der jeweiligen Präsentation und Einordnung des populistischen Stereotyps selbst folgt dessen Gegenüberstellung mit der Realität. So lässt sich zeigen, wie die Wirklichkeit von Populisten verzeichnet wird. Umgekehrt erweist sich das populistische S- reotyp als Zerrbild. Bernd Lüdkemeier und Wilfried Welz von der Landeszentrale für politische Bildung des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt haben diese Studie angeregt und fördernd begleitet.
