Näher erleutert wird zudem der letzte Ausbruch des Laacher-See-Vulkans vor 12.900 Jahren und die aktuelle Frage nach der Aktivität der Eifelvulkane. Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft. Wohl kein anderes Naturschauspiel prägt seit jeher das Bewusstsein der Menschen wie der Vulkanismus. So beeinflussten Vulkane bereits vor Jahrtausenden das Denken und Handeln der Bevölkerung. In vielen Kulturen galten sie aufgrund ihrer majestätischen und ehrfurchtgebietenden Erscheinung als "Sitz der Götter". Beispiele hierfür sind die jähzornige Vulkangöttin Pele auf der Insel Hawaii oder Hephaistos, der im Ätna Waffen für die Götter des Olymp schmiedete. Viele der mythisch überlieferten Eruptionen, also die Ausbrüche der Vulkane, wurden als unheilbringend und im Christentum sogar als Hölle bezeichnet. Dadurch zeigt sich auch die uralte "Grundangst" der Menschen gegenüber diesen unheimlichen Naturspektakeln, welche auch Goethe bei seiner berühmten Italienreise am 16. Februar 1787 anspricht: "Denke ich an Neapel, ja gar nach Sizilien, so fällt es [...] auf, da in diesen Paradiesen der Welt sich zugleich die vulkanische Hölle so gewaltsam auftut und seit Jahrtausenden die Wohnenden und Genie enden aufschreckt und irre macht".
