Das Gefühl der Menschen, so hei t es im Mann ohne Eigenschaften von Robert Musil, habe jedoch "noch nicht gelernt, sich ihres Verstandes zu bedienen, und zwischen diesen beiden liegt ein Unterschied in der Entwicklung, der fast so gro ist wie der zwischen dem Blinddarm und der Gro hirnrinde." Diese Daseinsproblematik ist das Thema der vorliegenden Arbeit. Die innere Dürre, die ungeheuerliche Mischung von Schärfe im Einzelnen und Gleichgültigkeit im Ganzen, das ungeheure Verlassensein des Menschen in einer Wüste von Einzelheiten, seine Unruhe, Bosheit, Herzensgleichgültigkeit ohnegleichen, Geldsucht, Kälte und Gewalttätigkeit, wie sie unsre Zeit kennzeichnen, sollen [...] einzig und allein die Folge der Verluste sein, die ein logisch scharfes Denken der Seele zufügt! (MoE, S. 40) Diese Ambivalenz, die im Innern aufklafft, scheint charakteristisch für den Menschen in der Moderne zu sein und zugleich seine Entfremdung zu bewirken. Der Mensch mit seinem Fühlen und Streben nach Sinnhaftigkeit, steht jenem logisch scharfen Denken, überhaupt der rationalistischen Weltauffassung der Moderne, anachronistisch gegenüber. Die Folge dessen: die stetige Absorption der Seele zugunsten des rationalistischen Weltbezuges und damit der Verlust der Unmittelbarkeit zum eigenen Erleben. Dadurch wird, wie es scheint, eben nicht die Kunst des Lebens gefördert, sondern sich vielmehr von ihr entfernt, von den "Quellen des Lebens". Um deshalb einen tieferen Einblick in die oben geschilderte Problematik zu geben, bedient sich diese Arbeit der Philosophie Nietzsches als Bezugsrahmen, bevor näher auf den jeweils zeithistorischen Kontext der beiden Werke und Hauptprotagonisten eingegangen wird.
