Im Zuge der wachsenden Globalisierung und der damit verbundenen Arbeitsteilung in der Volkswirtschaft, wächst das Transportaufkommen von Personen und Waren von Jahr zu Jahr stetig. Dabei kommt dem Luftverkehrssystem in den letzten Jahren eine immer grö er werdende Bedeutung zu. Zum einen wird das Fliegen durch technische Innovation und immer grö er werdende Flugzeugflotten immer billiger, zum anderen verbessert sich auch die Infrastruktur auf diesem Gebiet ständig. Das Netz aus Flughäfen wird immer dichter, es gibt nur noch wenige, ökonomisch interessante Areale, die nicht direkt bzw. indirekt per Flugzeug erreicht werden können. Aufgrund dieser Aspekte kam dem Luftverkehr eine wichtige wirtschaftlich Bedeutung zu, Personen und Waren können schnell und relativ günstig in alle Welt, 24 Stunden am Tag transportiert werden. Neue Chancen und Möglichkeiten entstanden für den Tourismus der ein Gro teil der Transportkapazitäten im Luftverkehr für sich einnimmt. Waren die früher Wochen lang auf Schiffen über die Meere fuhren, erreichen uns binnen Stunden. Dadurch haben unsere Konsummöglichkeiten, aber auch die Absatzmöglichkeiten der Produzenten, enorm dazu gewonnen. Flughäfen bilden die Schnittstelle zwischen den Verkehrsträgern am Boden (Stra e, Schiene, Wasser) und dem Flugzeug als Verkehrsmittel in der Luft. Sie stellen die nötige Infrastruktur bereit, um Menschen und Güter sicher mit dem Flugzeug befördern zukönnen. Die Aufgabe diese Infrastruktur zu bewirtschaften und zu warten, wird von Betreibergesellschaften wie der Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide, im weiteren nur Fraport AG, übernommen.
