Somit sind Frauenbewegungen als politische wie auch als kulturelle Bewegungen gekennzeichnet und verfolgen unter anderem die folgenden Ziele: - gleiche gesellschaftliche und politische Verhältnisse für Frauen und Männer - Veränderung der Lebensweise und Veränderung kultureller Praktiken und Normen im Geschlechterverhältnis die der Selbstbestimmung und Rechtsgleicheit von Frauen im öffentlichen und privaten Leben entgegenstehen Die Frauenbewegung ist eine beispielhaft moderne Bewegung denn sie geht von der Veränderbarkeit der Verhältnisse und der "Machbarkeit" von Geschichte aus. Frauen sind allerdings nicht nur Teil der Frauenbewegungen sondern haben aufgrund ihrer unterschiedlichen Zugehörigkeiten und auch als "Hälfte" der Menschheit an vielen anderen politischen, religiösen, kulturellen und sozialen Bewegungen teil und initiieren diese mit. Frauenbewegungen stellen somit nur einen Teil des gesellschaftlichen Engagements von Frauen dar. Frauenbewegungen lassen sich in "drei Wellen" einteilen. Während der ersten Frauenbewegung welche von 1843 (1865) bis zum Anfang der 1960er Jahre dauerte, wollte man eine politische Gleichberechtigung erreichen. Sie kämpfte daher für mehr Bürgerrechte, darunter das Wahlrecht, den Zugang zu Bildung und die Abschaffung der Vernunftehe. Die Zweite Welle dauerte von 1960 bis 1990.
