Welcher Anteil an der Verbreitung von Angst und Unsicherheit und der Wahrnehmung von Risiko ist dabei den Massenmedien zuzurechnen? Nicht zuletzt im Zusammenhang mit dem zunehmenden internationalen Terrorismus sind diese Fragen von zentraler gesellschaftlicher Bedeutung. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es insbesondere, die Wechselwirkungen zwischen terroristischen Aktionen und der Berichterstattung hierüber in den westlichen Medien herauszuarbeiten und die Folgen dieser Berichterstattung auf tatsächliche, aber oft auch nur auf gefühlte Bedrohungsszenarien und Angstzustände moderner Gesellschaften zu untersuchen. Dabei ist für das Verständnis des gesellschaftlichen Umgangs mit Angst und Unsicherheit zunächst entscheidend, eine Antwort auf die Frage zu finden, was Angst für den Menschen und die Gesellschaft bedeutet und wie sich diese im Laufe der Geschichte verändert hat. Soziologisch bedeutend ist hier insbesondere, inwieweit Angst das Handeln der Menschen beeinflusst. Desweiteren wird die Frage zu klären sein, inwieweit Angst und Unsicherheit bedeutsam für die gesellschaftliche Entwicklung sind. Eine zentrale Bedeutung kommt diesbezüglich der Handlungsproblematik in Bezug auf Erwartungssicherheiten einer sich wandelnden Gesellschaft zu, denn eine aufgrund funktionaler Ausdifferenzierung immer komplexer werdenden Gesellschaft produziert zunehmend Kontingenzen, welche alte Handlungssicherheiten in Frage stellen. Es wird demnach zu untersuchen sein, inwieweit Handlungssicherheiten und Ängste inter-kulturell divergieren und somit Rückschlüsse auf einen sozialen Ursprung liefern. Darauf aufbauend wird der Frage nachgegangen, inwiefern und aus welchen Gründen Unsicherheit und Angst in die gesellschaftliche Definition des Risikos verwandelt werden. Ent
