Hauptsächlich wird die Versorgung im Alter durch Beiträge in die Rentenkasse während der Erwerbsphase aufgebaut und im Alter in Form einer Rente ausgezahlt. Die gesetzliche Rentenversicherung (GRV) bildet dabei die erste und wichtigste von drei Säulen der Alterssicherung. Das Ziel der GRV ist es, den Lebensstandard während der erwerbslosen Jahre im Altersruhestand zu sichern. Für den Gro teil der Erwerbstätigen ist die GRV die wesentliche Sicherung gegen die Risiken des Alters, der verminderten Erwerbsfähigkeit sowie der Hinterbliebenenschaft im Falle des Ablebens. Darüber hinaus werden auch Renten zur Rehabilitation gewährt. Die GRV blickt auf eine mehr als 100-jährige Geschichte zurück. Im Rahmen der Bismarckschen Gesetzgebung wurde am 22. Juni 1889 das "Gesetz betreffend die Invaliditäts- und Altersicherung" erlassen. Die wesentlichen strukturellen Merkmale von damals haben sich bis heute erhalten, allerdings ist die GRV immer neuen politischen und gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen ausgesetzt, wie zum Beispiel durch die Deutsche Wiedervereinigung 1990 und durch den demographischen Wandel, den unsere Gesellschaft aktuell durch-läuft. Die gesetzliche Rentenversicherung beinhaltet eine Fülle von unterschiedlichen Leistungen und Leistungsvoraussetzungen. Es ist daher wichtig, diese im ersten Teil im Einzelnen vorzustellen. Im zweiten Teil dieser Arbeit wird zu Beginn auf die aktuellen Probleme der gesetzlichen Rentenversicherung und auf die daraus resultierten Reformma nahmen der Jahre 2003 und 2004 eingegangen.
