Das Interesse, welehes der Vortrag bei Sehiffahrt und Sehiffbau gefunden hat, lieG es wUDsehens- wert erscheinen, denselben weiteren Kreisen zug?nglich zu maehen. Der Sonderabdruek wurde gleich bei der Herstellung des Jahrbuehs 1907 fertig- gestellt und eine Erg?nzung dureh einen Naehtrag beim Erseheinen in Aussieht genommen. Die Entstehung der Buehausgabe m5ge das Anfiigen des Naeh- trages an Stelle ciner verânderten Autlage reehtfertigen. Der Kreis derer, welehe sieh ffir die Segelsehiffahrt interessieren, ist groG, klein aber die Zahl derer, welche derselben noeh eine Zukunft geben. Vielleieht trifft aueh hier das alte Spriehwort zu, "wer oft tot ges gt wird, lebt am l?ngsten". Das Aussterben der groGen Segelsehiffe wird seit 50 Jahren prophezeit; ganz nahe aber solIte ihr Ende sein naeh Er5ffnung des Suez-Kanals. Trotz dieser Prophezeiungen sind gerade durch den seharfen Kampf mit den Dampfern erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten die groGen Vier- und Fiinfmast-Schiffe gesehaffen worden. Von neuem wird nunmehr das sichere Ende der groGen Segelsehiffe dureh den Panama-Kanal angekundigt; vielleieht bringen statt dessen die n?ehsten Jahre oder Jahrzehnte mit den Fortsehritten der Teehnik aueh wieder eine Vermehrung der groGen Segel- sehiffe auf langer Fahrt. Ieh glaube daran! Mensehen und Kohlen werden immer teurer, demgegenuber steht der stets vorhandene Wind, weleher als Betriebskosten nur den Ersatz der Segel und des laufenden Gutes beansprueht.
